Chaturangasana is considered to be dislike amongst users who have been practicing yoga for a very long time, but for beginners it is an important step. The reason behind them disliking it is because most students say that it makes them feel like a weakling, without any type of power. |

Chaturangasana has the literal translation from Sanskrit as the four limb staff position. To break it down further, Chatur comes from the Sanskrit meaning four, Anga and Asana also are words from Sanskrit. The Chaturangasans has a fairly easy and helpful technique. First you come on to the ground with your hands and knees. Your hands should be placed directly underneath your shoulders while your knees are supposed to be under you hips. After you get into this position you should curl your toes under your feet and straighten your legs out behind you. This will help you lift off your shoulders. Once you have accomplished this you should bring your body into a straight line, as straight as humanly possible. There are two things you should avoid when in this pose. First, avoid the dipping of the spine and the movement of hips. This can make you out of line and unbalanced. The most important thing to feel is the two-way oppositional stretch. You feel this stretch from the crown of your head which reaches forward and the heels which stretch out in the opposite direction. While in this position you should breathe into your abdomen. This helps prevent the accumulation of excess tension in that area. To recover from the Chaturangasana, you should just reverse the steps taken into this position.
You can get many health benefits from practicing the Chaturangsana. Practicing this position can strengthen your wrists, forearms, back and stomach muscles. This position helps to increase body strength along with stability and balance. This is done through the development of several muscles including biceps, triceps and the abs. Chaturangsansa helps define these muscles as well. For those who want better abs, this is one yoga pose you should practice everyday. |
