Salamba Sirsasana

Salamba Sirasana, a term is derived from the ancient language of Sanskrit. Salamba means supported and sira translates into head. So the literal translation of Salamba Sirasana means supported headstand pose. This is an extremely advanced and powerful asana. It is referred as the King of the Asanas due to the effect it has on the entire body.

The Salamba Siasana is started by facing a wall. Kneel down with your knees and legs together. Your forearms should be resting on the floor with the fingers interlocked. Your arms can move a little closer than shoulder distance so there can be more stability.

When in this position you place the crown of your head on a blanket up against your interlocked hands.  Now you should curl your toes under and straighten you legs. Walk your feet in toward your head until your torso and hips are raised vertically towards the ceiling with the tailbone or your hips resting against the wall. Raise your feet while you continue to bend your knees in over your abdomen. Keep your knees bent and bring you soles to rest up against the wall. Now straighten your legs upward, using the wall as support. Now push forward in the hips so that everything is in line with the torso in the vertical position. Now try to lift yourself up and out off your shoulders. Try to hold this pose for ten seconds. This is recommended for beginners. As you practice the Salamba Sirasana more often, gradually add five to ten seconds more onto your stand everyday. As you gain more experience with practice you will be able to hold this pose for ten minutes. Be sure to increase the duration of your stand very slowly and gradually. Remember that you should always reverse in as much of a controlled manner as possible.
