Yoga and Diet

Yoga recommends a healthy diet habit for those people who follow regular yoga and wants to extract the best out of it. Yoga Science suggests simple foods which are easily digestible. Such foods are not only good for physical health but also provide charm and tranquility to the body. You should strictly follow the eating habits as prescribed by the yoga instructor to remain healthy and fit. Yoga Science and the Ayurveda Science classify the food into three different types i.e. Rajasic, Satvic and the Tamasic.

Rajasic food can be explained as ‘The foods which are stimulating and provides the body the needed energy to do the work’. In other words, it is a ‘stimulus generator’ i.e. the energy. Too much consumption of these foods will result in weight gain and restlessness of the body. Yoga and Ayurveda Science advises that these foods should be taken in limited amounts. Foods like meat, garlic, onion, curry, tea, coffee fall in this category. These foods have pungent smell.

The purest form of food as considered by Yoga Science is the Satvic food. It is considered to be pure in the sense that it contains all the vital nutrients needed for the body. These foods promote nutrition as well as energy for the body, yet they are simple and easy to digest. That’s why these foods are healthy and considered pure. Examples of satvic foods are nuts and seeds, yoghurt, honey, fresh fruits and green vegetables.

Rice and grains also comes under the category of Satvic food. These two cereals provide fiber which helps in the formation of the bowels and also assists in the digestion process. These foods require little or sometimes require no preparation at all before consumption. Thus, in these types of foods the nutrition remains intact and remains undisturbed even after cooking. So, sometimes these foods are served raw or served lightly cooked. These foods provide the greatest benefits like keeping the body to stay healthy, nourishing the body to grow and recover from illness.
